Grass-A-Matazz is a, free-of-charge, jazz & Blues event, held during the annual High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam (NL).
The Grass-A-Matazz party celebrates, and keeps alive, the connection between Jazz & Marijuana.
Louis Armstrong: (1931) "We did call ourselves Vipers, which could have been anybody from all walks of life that smoked and respected 'gage'. That was our cute little name for marijuana, and it was a misdemeanor in those days. Much different from the pressure and charges the law lays on a guy who smokes pot - a later name for the same thing which is cute to hear nowadays. We always looked at pot as a sort of medicine, a cheap drunk and with much better thoughts than one that's full of liquor. But with the penalties that came, I for one had to put it down though the respect for it (gage) will stay with me forever. I have every reason to say these words and am proud to say them. From experience"... Gage, tea, muggles, reefers, and a dozen more names for marijuana, were common parlance among jazz musicians and friends who were 'Vipers.' This word has a period ring today, but was much used (as was tea) in some jazz circles during the `30s. It found its way into quite a few tune titles, among them Mezzrow's "Sendin' The Vipers," Snuff Smith's "If You're a Viper" and Fats Waller's "Viper's Drag." The rest of the marijuana-smokers' jargon infiltrated respectable society by way of record labels and catalogues and music publishers' lists. "Golden Leaf Strut," "Muggles," "Texas Tea Party," "Chant of the Weed," "Song of the Vipers" and "Smokin' Reefers" are random examples of `celebratory' recordings made in the `20s and `30s.
The Grass-A-Matazz is an idea of Self-Hemployed (Dutch hemp/cannabis- promotion organisation) and Ceres Seeds (Amsterdam based cannabis seed company).
In 2006, the second Grass-A-Matazz was held! Grass A Matazz 2006, The Second Edition was a smash! About 400 Cannabis Cup Judges and other guests joint us through-out the evening to help celebrate Ceres Seeds’ entry Fruity Thai and enjoy The Grass-A-Matazz party & musical line-up!
The party kicked off with the tunes of DJ Vinny Vega and the sweet smell of Fruity Thai from the vaporiser. All Guests received a Bush Grinder*, from Hempshopper at the door. (* Why? Well, wouldn’t you like to grind Bush for a bit?!) At the same time, on the second floor, Radio Free Amsterdam hosted a John Sinclair Radio Show.
There, from the up-stairs Grass-A-Matazz lounge, overlooking the entrance, John Sinclair played his jazz & blues favourites and talkes about his new album Criss Cross. On air, he has a chat with the Self-Hemployed people, Ravi from Sensi Seeds and the guys from Ceres Seeds. They talk about Cannabis, Counter Culture, Ben Dronkers & Ed Rosenthal, Cup Politics and of course the Grass-A-Matazz party! John also talkes to The Rainbow Family, Super Dude & Mark Ritsema. >> Read More...
In 2005, the very first Grass-A-Matazz was held.
November 23 2005 at Club Ministry in Amsterdam
The Grass-A-Matazz 2005 featured special guest John Sinclair (American freedom fighter, poet & radio maker) performing live on stage supported by a bagpipe player. One of the most interesting musical combinations seen.
The Jazz Vibes were created by the Dutch DJs Money, Pothead & Organic. The party was especially celebrating the new Self-Hemployed website FriendsOfCannabis.com and the Ceres Seeds' Cannabis seed strain Fruit Thai.
At the door, 150 limited edition Grass-A-Matazz hemp t-shirts were given away and several Self-Hemployed t-shirts. A raffle was held on behalf of the Cannabis College (non-profit organisation) Amsterdam, hosted by Willy White & the Ganja Girls. Winners of the raffle went home with cannabis seeds, hemp fashion accessories, exclusive hemp body care products, digital scales, glass pieces and all kinds of other cannabis & hemp related prizes (courtesy of Hempshopper).
There were fresh snacks/ munchies and free tokes from the vaporizer carousel (four different vaporizers with Ceres Seeds' Fruity Thai cannabis vapor) made the feast complete.
About 300 Cannabis Cup Judges attended the celebration.
